Bill 6 is a document that expands coverage to firefighters for four work related cancers, which includes breast cancer. Meaning, that those who work as a firefighter, has coverage against four work related cancers. It will also give worker-compensation benefit will be paid for firefighters who suffer from primary-site prostate, skin cancers, and multiple myeloma.

In 2002, Manitoba recognized cancer as an occupational risk for firefighters. President of The United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg, Alex Forest explained that firefighters lay their lives on the line during deadly situations, but also face a higher risk of developing cancer in the later years. Firefighters need some form of protection if they work in a deadly field that gives individuals a higher risk of developing cancer, which is why action has been taken place.

Since Manitoba’s step to change, six other Canadian provinces, several U. S states and in some European Countries have copied this law. The government of Manitoba is being applauded for recognizing the dangers firefighters lives are in.

The 3-Day walk for Breast Cancer that was held in Michigan last weekend raised $4.7 million for cancer research and programs. More than 1,800 people walked around 60 miles to raise money for a very noble cause.

Obviously the effects of the recession were felt. With a struggling auto industry many people have moved out of Michigan leading to less money raised and fewer participants. Last year the 3-Day raised almost double the money at $7.2 million and had almost double the participants at 3,000.

It still goes to show you the power of the human spirit and how determined some people are. It also gives a chance for those to show how caring and generous they are. Even though they did not reach last years total, $4.7 million is a significant amount of money and will surely help in cancer research.

If you’ve ever thought about getting involved then all I have to ask is, “What’s stopping you?” One in eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer, every little bit helps. Sometimes just knowing that there are people out there, trying their hardest to support those with cancer is good enough. So get out there, have some fun, if you raise money good for you, if not it’s alright just show your support.

The next 3-Day will be returning to Michigan in 2010. The walk will be August 13-15. You can register now. www.the3day.org.

Now if you are like most people, you like to have the occasional drink or two, but sometimes you find you can get carried away and that couple of drinks turns into an unknown number of drinks and a splitting headache in the morning. Some people tend to drink heavily more often then they really should. And I don’t want to sound like that nagging parent, but it really isn’t good for your health. And even though there is plenty of evidence, like liver damage to help you realize that frequent heavy drinking isn’t good for your health, many people still do it. Maybe a new study from Montreal will help you realize the dangers of such high and frequent alcohol consumption.

The results of the study showed that those who drink a significant amount of beer and spirits most frequently are increasing their chances of developing six different types of cancer: esophageal, stomach, colon, liver, pancreatic and lung. The increase is actually quite amazing, and isn’t something to be taken lightly. The results showed an increase in risk of liver cancer by 800%, esophageal cancer by 700%, prostate and colon cancer by 80%, and lung cancer by 50%!

Though the risk of high intake or beer and spirits is quite evident, those that choose to drink wine did not seem to have a higher risk. Whether there are antioxidants that help prevent cancer, or those that drink wine live a healthier lifestyle is unknown. What is known is that too much, too often is not good for you. Be sure to watch your alcohol intake. Drink safely, and if you are looking for a reason to quit, or just lesson your alcohol consumption, maybe this is it.
