Description

Generic Name: duloxetine hydrochloride

Drug Class: serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI)

Indications

Cymbalta (duloxetine) is an oral prescription drug used as an acute and maintenance treatment for major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. It is also used for diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Dosage Forms

This is available in Cymbalta 20 mg, 30 mg, and 60 mg capsules.

Cymbalta Mechanism of Action

The exact action of this SNRI is still unknown. However, it is thought to potentiate serotonergic and noradrenergic activities in the central nervous system. This increases the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine which are both involved in depression.

How to Take Cymbalta

It is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide provided by a healthcare provider before beginning to use this medication. You must not take any medication unless you have understood the uses and directions. For more medical advice or information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

This capsule is only intended for oral consumption. The dosage is typically one or two capsules per day. It can be consumed with or without food. If you experience nausea, take it with a meal. Swallow the capsule entirely. Do not crush or chew it to avoid releasing all the active ingredients at once.

Make a dosing schedule. Do not increase or decrease your Cymbalta dosage. You should not also take this oral drug more frequently than advised.

Always be watchful for any signs of serious allergic reactions, including trouble breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. If this occurs, stop taking this oral medication and seek emergency medical help immediately.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with a history of psychiatric disorders, suicide attempts, kidney disease, liver disease, hypertension, bleeding problems, seizure disorder, stomach problems, glaucoma, and alcohol abuse. Also, due to possible drug interactions, you should discuss all the prescription medications, nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

Dizziness, drowsiness, and vision changes are among the side effects of this SNRI. You should practice safety caution when doing tasks that require clear vision and alertness, especially driving. Further, Cymbalta and alcohol can interact and worsen your symptoms or adverse effects. It can also increase the risk of liver damage. Avoid drinking alcohol while on this treatment.

Patients taking this oral drug for major depressive disorder should be monitored for suicidal ideations. Call your local suicide hotline once you observe sudden changes in behavior, altered sleeping patterns, social withdrawal, giving away important belongings, and lack of interest in pleasurable activities.

Pregnant moms must avoid this oral drug as it is known to cause harm to unborn babies. The same goes for breastfeeding moms because it can also pass into the breastmilk.
