Drug Class: antidiuretic hormone, antihemorrhagic agent

Ddavp Melt Indications

Ddavp Melt is an oral prescription drug used to manage central cranial diabetes insipidus. This is also prescribed for temporary polyuria and polydipsia among patients with brain trauma/brain surgery around the pituitary glands region. It is also indicated for primary nocturnal enuresis or “bed wetting”.

Ddavp Melt Dosage Forms

This is available in Ddavp Melt 60 mcg, and 120 mcg orally disintegrating tablets.

Ddavp Melt Mechanism of Action

This oral lyophilisate mainly stimulates vasopressin 2 or V2 receptors. This then results in an increase in water reabsorption in the kidneys and a reduction in urine production. In addition, this oral medication can also enhance platelet function by increasing the release of von Willebrand factor or vWF and factor VIII from the endothelium.

How to Take Ddavp Melt

Before starting to take Ddavp Melt, it is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further medical advice or additional details if you do not understand the uses and directions of this medication.

This oral medication is meant to be taken sublingually. This is usually prescribed three times a day or as prescribed by the physician. You may administer it with or without a meal. Place the tablet under your tongue and let it dissolve. It may take a few seconds or minutes for the medication to be completely absorbed. You may have to limit the drinking of water while on this treatment.

Make a dosing schedule. Do not increase or decrease your DDAVP dosage as it is based on your overall health condition and how you will respond to the therapy. You should also not take it more frequently and never stop using the tablet abruptly as it can lead to worsening conditions.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with a history of certain medical conditions, such as blocked blood vessels, heart failure, any heart disease, cystic fibrosis, mineral/fluid imbalance, high blood pressure, low sodium in the blood (hyponatremia), kidney disease, blood clots, and bleeding problems. Due to possible drug interactions, you should discuss all the prescription medications, nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

Practice safety caution as this medication can cause dizziness and drowsiness. You must also limit your consumption of alcoholic drinks. Note that alcohol can also interfere with the effect of desmopressin.

Report to your healthcare provider once you develop any condition or illness that may cause water and mineral imbalance. This includes diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and infections like flu. You should also report any conditions or situations that require drinking more fluids, like heavy sweating, doing strenuous exercise, and exposure to extremely hot weather. The physician may have to hold or adjust desmopressin in these conditions.

Elderly patients who are taking this drug must always be monitored. Kidney function becomes less efficient as people age. This type of drug is being excreted by the kidneys. Thus, geriatric patients have higher risks of mineral imbalance or having low levels of potassium in the bloodstream.

It is not known yet this drug can cause harm to unborn babies so pregnant moms must take this oral drug only if extremely necessary. If you are breastfeeding, this drug may pass into the breastmilk so you must discuss all the possible risks with your doctor before deciding to take this product.
