Description

Generic Name: sumatriptan succinate

Drug Class: serotonin receptor agonist

Indications

Imitrex Injection is a subcutaneous injection used for acute treatment of migraine with or without aura. It is also used to relieve cluster headaches in adults. Imitrex Injection must only be used if there is a clear diagnosis of migraine and cluster headache and is not indicated for the prophylactic therapy of both conditions.

Dosage Forms

This is available in Imitrex 6 mg single-dose prefilled syringe cartridges.

Imitrex Injection Mechanism of Action

This injection has agonist effects on serotonin receptors in the intracranial blood vessels and the sensory nerves of the trigeminal system. This leads to the constriction of cranial vessels and pro-inflammatory neuropeptide release inhibition.

How to Use Imitrex Injection

Before using Imitrex Injection, it is necessary to read the drug information or patient information leaflet, or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. You must not use any medication unless you have understood the uses and directions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further medical advice or additional details.

This subcutaneous injection is prescribed as needed. Remember that you should not administer more than 2 of the 6 mg doses or 3 of the 4 mg doses in a 24-hr period. Do not increase/decrease your Imitrex injection dosage and always use this product precisely as advised.

Step-by-step Guide on using Imitrex Injection:

  1. Start by choosing the fatty area where you will inject the medication. Then, wipe the area using an alcohol swab.
  2. Press the pen firmly against the skin and push the blue button.
  3. Hold it still against the skin for about 5 seconds.
  4. Carefully remove the pen from the skin. Take care not to get your hands on the needle.
