Description

Carteolol Hydrochloride (Carteolol Hydrochloride) Details

Carteolol Hydrochloride is an ophthalmic solution used as a treatment for certain eye conditions. It has the generic name Carteolol hydrochloride and is classified as an antiglaucoma or a beta blocker. It is only indicated for ophthalmic use and should not be used for other routes of administration. This non-selective beta-adrenoreceptor blocking agent is a sterile solution that contains benzalkonium chloride as its preservative. Although the exact action of this eye medication on elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is not fully established, its effect is thought to be associated with its intrinsic sympathomimetic activity, which decreases the amount of fluid inside the eye. It has no significant effects on the size of the pupil, tear production, and corneal sensitivity. Carteolol Hydrochloride (carteolol hydrochloride) 1% is supplied in 5 mL bottles. This product is only available as a prescription.

What are The Uses of Carteolol Hydrochloride (Carteolol Hydrochloride)?

This beta-blocker is prescribed for patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma and intraocular hypertension as it is known to lower intraocular pressure or IOP. Lowering the pressure inside the eye can prevent complications like vision loss or blindness. It can be used for monotherapy or as an adjunct to other eye medication indicated to lower the IOP.

Your physician may prescribe this eye medication for other conditions that were not mentioned. Please note that patients should only use this if prescribed by the physician. Using it for other purposes without consulting the doctor may worsen your condition.

It is very important to use this product exactly as directed by the doctor. Carteolol Hydrochloride is usually administered on drop twice a day, preferably at equal intervals. Avoid blinking or rubbing your eyes right after application to ensure that the solution will be absorbed properly. Do not use these eye drops more frequently than advised.

Does Carteolol Hydrochloride (Carteolol Hydrochloride) have Side Effects?

Most of the side effects of Carteolol Hydrochloride are mild and should only last a few days. Its common side effects are mild burning or stinging of the eye, redness, watery eyes, mild eye itching, temporary blurred vision, puffy eyes, stuffy nose, dizziness, and headache. If these adverse effects worsen or do not resolve after a while, in that case, you may have to contact your healthcare provider for assessment.

Other side effects of this ophthalmic solution can be serious. Some of the side effects that must be reported immediately are eye pain, eye swelling, unusual discharge from the eye, eye sensitivity to light, sudden weight gain, swelling of the feet/ankles, unusual tiredness, irregular heartbeat, wheezing, trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, unusual sweating, confusion, weakness on one side of the body, trouble speaking, and depression or other mental changes. You should discontinue using the solution if any of these severe/serious side effects occur.

Carteolol Hydrochloride (Carteolol Hydrochloride) Warnings

People with known hypersensitivity to carteolol, timolol, or other beta-blockers should not use this medication. Severe allergic reactions can be dangerous and may warrant emergency medical attention. Signs to look out for are trouble breathing, swelling of the face, severe itchiness, and severe dizziness. If any of these occur, contact a medical professional.

This ophthalmic solution may be contraindicated for people with certain medical histories, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, stroke, cerebral insufficiency, blood circulation problems, diabetes, depression, and myasthenia gravis. You should also disclose to your doctor all medications you are using because of the possibility of drug interactions.

Due to the temporary blurring of vision that this eye medication may cause, patients are advised not to drive, use machinery, or do tasks requiring clear eyesight. You may carry on with these activities once your normal vision has returned.

There is no sufficient scientific information on the effect of Carteolol Hydrochloride during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Those women who are pregnant or nursing are advised to avoid this product except if strongly recommended by a physician.
