Description

Indications

Eliquis (apixaban) is an oral tablet indicated to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism among patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. It also prevents deep vein thrombosis (DVT), leading to pulmonary embolism after hip or knee replacement surgery. It can treat and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism after initial therapy.

This is available in Eliquis 5 mg and 2.5 mg tablets.

Eliquis Mechanism of Action

Eliquis is a selective inhibitor of Factor Xa (FXa). It works by indirectly inhibiting the aggregation of platelets that is induced by thrombin. Through the inhibition of FXa, thrombin generation and thrombus development can decrease.

How to Use Eliquis

Before starting to take this medication, it is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. You must not take any medication unless you have understood all the information regarding it. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further medical advice or additional details.

This tablet is only meant to be taken by mouth. You may administer your dose with or without a meal. Drink a glass of water after consuming the pill. If you cannot swallow it whole, crush the tablet and mix it with your beverage or a tablespoon of apple sauce.

Make a dosage schedule to avoid skipping medications. This is usually prescribed twice daily, every 12 hours. Once you miss your dose of Eliquis, take it right away. Do not increase or decrease your dose and alter your frequency as they are based on your age, weight, medical condition, kidney function, response to therapy, and other drugs you are taking. It is also important to keep taking this medication and comply with the length of treatment. Stopping this medication abruptly could lead to worsening conditions.

Precautions / Warnings when using Eliquis

Do not take this oral prescription if you have a known allergy to apixaban or any inactive ingredients each tablet contains. Be watchful for signs of a severe allergic reaction, including difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. If this happens, immediately stop taking this drug and seek emergency medical help.

Certain diseases or disorders may greatly impact how your body will respond to the treatment. Disclose complete medical history to your physician, especially any history of bleeding problems, blood disorders, liver disease, kidney disease, recent surgeries, and antiphospholipid syndrome. Because of possible drug interactions, it is also important to discuss all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

This oral drug may increase the risk of bleeding. Practice caution while using sharp objects like razors, knives, and nail cutters. You should also avoid activities with a high risk of injuries, such as contact sports.

Drinking alcohol may further increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Limit or avoid alcohol and report to your healthcare provider any symptoms of severe abdominal pain, feeling of passing out, and black, tarry stool.
