Description

Generic Name: ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone

Drug Class: fluoroquinolone antibacterial and corticosteroid

Ciprodex Indications

Ciprodex is an otic prescription suspension that is used to treat acute otitis media among patients 6 months and above. This is also used to treat acute otitis externa among pediatric and adult patients. This medication can also reduce ear swelling and discomfort.

Ciprodex Dosage Forms

This is available in Ciprodex 0.3% ciprofloxacin hydrochloride and 0.1% dexamethasone otic suspension.

Ciprodex Mechanism of Action

Its first active ingredient, ciprofloxacin, has a bactericidal action. It works by inhibiting enzymes topoisomerase II or DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. These are the enzymes that are required for the replication, transcription, repair, and recombination of bacterial DNA.

Another active ingredient is dexamethasone. This component has been proven to suppress inflammation through the inhibition of multiple inflammatory cytokines. This leads to a decrease in edema, fibrin deposition, capillary leakage, and migration of inflammatory cells.

How to Use Ciprodex

Before using Ciprodex, it is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. You must not administer any medication unless you have understood the uses and directions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further medical advice or additional details.

This suspension must only be administered in the ears. It is usually prescribed twice daily, every two hours, or as prescribed by the physician. Make a dosing schedule. It is best to use this drug at equal intervals. Do not increase or decrease your Ciprodex dosage, and do not use it more frequently than advised. Do not discontinue the drug abruptly unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Step-by-step Guide on how to use Ciprodex

  1. Make sure that the ear canal is clean and dry before applying this solution.
  2. Wash your hands thoroughly and then pat them dry. You must also avoid touching the tip of the medication bottle to avoid contamination.
  3. Warm the bottle in your hands for about a minute or two. Shake the bottle well.
  4. The patient must lie down with the affected ear upward.
  5. Hold the dropper directly above the ear. Press the bottle gently and dispense the number of drops prescribed by the doctor.
  6. While applying the ear drops, gently pull the earlobe up and back to make sure that the drops will flow down to the ear canal. For pediatric patients, the ear must be pulled down and back.
  7. The patient must stay in the same position for a minute. You may insert a soft cotton plug if necessary.
  8. Repeat on the other ear if directed. Do not rinse the applicator after use.

If this occurs, stop using this suspension and seek emergency medical help immediately.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with a history of ear infections, especially if it is caused by a virus or fungus, such as herpes simplex.
