Description

Generic Name: empagliflozin and linagliptin

Drug Class: sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor

Indications

Glyxambi is an oral prescription drug used to improve glycemic control among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when treatment with empagliflozin and linagliptin is necessary. It is also used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular mortality among patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.

Dosage Forms

This is available in Glyxambi 25 mg / 5 mg and 10 mg / 5 mg tablets.

Glyxambi Mechanism of Action

This is a combination product of an SGLT2 inhibitor and a DPP-4 inhibitor. First, it reduces the reabsorption of filtered glucose from the tubular lumen and lessens the renal threshold of glucose, resulting in an increase in urinary glucose excretion. Second, it slows the inactivation of incretin hormones. By prolonging and increasing the levels of active incretin hormones, insulin release is increased, and glucagon levels in the circulation are decreased in a glucose-dependent manner.
