This injection has a vasodilating effect while inhibiting platelet aggregation. It can induce an erection by relaxing the trabecular smooth muscle and dilating the cavernosal arteries through binding into the receptors and increasing the levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate.

Step-by-step Guide on how to use Caverject:
- Using an alcohol swab, wipe the injection site and let it dry.
- If uncircumcised, pull the foreskin back. Then, hold the tip of your penis using your thumb and forefinger. Stretch it lengthwise down your thigh.
- Squeeze your penis using the thumb and another finger until the injection site bulges. Position the penis against your thigh to keep it from moving.
- Remove the needle cap of the injection and push the needle into the proximal third of your penis. Remember not to inject it into veins or blood vessels.
- In a slow and steady manner, push the plunger carefully to eject medication.
- Pull the needle slowly out of the injection site and press the site gently for about 5 minutes using a clean cotton swab.
- Dispose the used needle and syringe accordingly.
