Description

Generic Name: ipratropium bromide

Drug Class: anticholinergic

Indications

Atrovent Inhaler is a prescription inhalation used as maintenance treatment of bronchospasm linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It also prevents and controls breathing symptoms, such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.

Dosage Forms

This is available in Atrovent Inhaler 20 mcg ipratropium bromide in 200 doses actuations.

Atrovent Inhaler Mechanism of Action

It inhibits vagally-mediated reflexes through the antagonization of the action of acetylcholine. It also increases the intracellular concentration of calcium, which is due to the acetylcholine interaction with muscarinic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle.

How to Use Atrovent Inhaler

Before you start using Atrovent Inhaler, you must read the drug information leaflet or brochure that comes with it. Do not use this oral inhaler unless you thoroughly understand all the information and instructions. For more information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

This is usually prescribed four times a day. Make a dosing schedule so you will not miss your doses. Do not increase/decrease your Atrovent Inhaler dosage or use this inhaler more frequently than prescribed. If you have prescribed two puffs or with other inhalers, wait for at least one minute before taking another actuation.

Step-by-step Guide on how to use Atrovent Inhaler:

  1. Insert the canister into the actuator. Ensure that it is firmly inserted. Then, remove the protective cap of the mouthpiece.
  2. Exhale deeply through the mouth.
  3. Hold the inhalation aerosol in a vertical/upright manner, between your thumb and the index and middle fingers. Then, put the mouthpiece inside the mouth.
  4. Close your eyes to avoid getting the medication into your eyes.
  5. Breathe in slowly but deeply as you fully press the canister to dispense the drug.
  6. Hold your breath for 10 secs or more and remove the inhaler from the mouth.
  7. Once finished, put the protective cap back into the mouthpiece.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not use this inhalation aerosol if you have a known allergy to ipratropium, atropine, belladonna-type drugs, or any inactive ingredients it may contain. Always be watchful for any signs of serious allergic reactions, including trouble breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. If this occurs, stop taking this oral medication and seek emergency medical help immediately.

Atrovent Inhaler may be contraindicated for people with a history of angle-closure glaucoma, enlarged prostate, or difficulty urinating. Also, due to possible drug interactions, you should discuss all the prescription medications, nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

Dizziness and blurred vision are among the common adverse reactions to Atrovent Inhaler. Practice safety caution when doing tasks that would need alertness, especially driving. You must also limit drinking alcohol while taking this tablet.
